Finally, a note about the slide cover: a recolored image of Banksy’s famous 2010 street art of a tired painter with the subversive epigram, “Follow Your Dreams,” cancelled out.
Banksy is a famous graffiti artist and cultural icon in the U.K. Still anonymous, he painted this piece in a low-income area of Boston’s ChinatownSince that time it has become one of his most noteworthy projectsBased on his work, most people believe Banksy is a member of Generation X.

Banksy

One of the most famous, or infamous, graffiti artists goes by the name Banksy. He (?) is a pseudonymous England-based artist, political activist, film director, and painter. His trademark is a stencil-style guerrilla art of political and social commentary that has been featured on streets, walls, and bridges in cities throughout the world, first making his presence known in London, Brighton, and Bristol. There has been much publicity and controversy surrounding the artist because Banksy's true identity has never really been known, becoming a guarded secret. There has been much speculation and research to figure out who this artist(s) actually is. Banksy states on his website, "I am unable to comment on who may or may not be Banksy, but anyone described as being 'good at drawing' doesn't sound like Banksy to me." Critics have described his work as simple vandalism. The works have dealt with many political and social issues such as anti-War, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, anti-authoritarianism, anarchism, and existentialism. They also deal with the human conditions of greed, poverty, hypocrisy, boredom, despair, and alienation. Banksy's work mocks central power, with hopes that it will show the public that although power does exist and work against you, that power is not terribly efficient and it can be and should be deceived.

  Tribute to the Cranberries:
(origainally published 12-15-19)

ROSES

Over the past few years a trend has been emerging with 90s bands reuniting, coming up with new material and touring. The Cranberries are no exception and their May 9th Toronto showcased the band as a genuine, true and just plain awesome blast from the past.

From the first notes of “Dreams” and the first words sang by lead singer Dolores O’Riordan, it became clear that they’ve still got it and that for the next 90 minutes they were going to take the audience on a ride of the wonderful 90s. “Dreams” was followed by “Linger” which immediately got the sold out crowd singing as loud as they could.

But it wasn’t all about the past. “Tomorrow”, a fresh and lively single from their new album seemed to be well received by the audience. Dolores thanked the crowd repeatedly, and sent special thanks to friends, family and teachers who were observing the gig from a special VIP area. The songstress is married to a Canadian, and in 2009 she relocated permanently to Buckhorn, Ontario with her family.

For the next twelve songs, the band played hits from their previous albums, taking the public on a rollercoaster ride of upbeat and slow songs. The rest of the band performed well too: Noel Hogan (guitar), Michael Hogan (bass), and Fergal Lawler (drums) put on a good performance, although it has to be said that a little more stage presence would have been appreciated. Perhaps this would have proved difficult with Dolores hogging the stage, moving from side to side, doing her brilliant trademark dance moves and getting as close to the crowd as possible without tripping over the security guards. The lighting and stage decor was very simple and subtle and it complemented the music genuinely. O’Riordan didn’t hesitate to let us know how hot it got in there and how she’s sweating like no tomorrow.

After the old school songs leg, they went on with another new song - “Shcizophrenic Playboy” - which sounded very sharp and then transitioned to “Ridiculous Thoughts” which seemed like a warm-up for the much anticipated “Zombie”. Like every band, The Cranberries have that one song that everyone’s there to see, expecting it – or else. Closing their set list with it was a great idea - and it sounded just awesome! It seemed like all of the sudden you were at another show, in a different time - the whole mood turned ‘90’s grunge and for the duration of the song the public forgot they were in the 21st century. There were strobe lights, people jumping, singing, power chords, and melodic guitars. During the chorus, the crowd took the lead with Dolores as the supporting voice.

The oh so expected encore followed a short break. The first two encore songs were “Conduct” and “Losing My Mind”, both sounding equally good. The show ended on a high and fast note with “Salvation”. All in all, the sold out show from Toronto was a great experience for anybody who is into 90’s rock, and even a greater experience for anybody who just got into The Cranberries as a result of their new album.
